I've had many UTIs since C-Diff, and have taken Macrobid (which is a safer antibiotic, but as you know, they can all cause C-Diff.) It was my personal choice to wait until the culture confirmed the type of bacteria, the count (which is important) and which antibiotic would kill it. I know how painful they are and how miserable they can make you! Two of those infections, Macrobid wouldn't work for, although most are caused by E-Coli, which Macrobid will kill. I had no choice other than to take Augmentin for them. 10 days each time, and the same for Macrobid. I was on Macrobid twice and Augmentin twice within a two month period, back to back, for a UTI that didn't want to resolve (and I've since had more UTIs but it's gotten much better). The last round of Augmentin finally did it. Bobbie takes a small dose of Macrobid daily to prevent UTIs and hasn't had a recurrence from it, if I'm not mistaken. I was about 15-16 months post C-Diff when I took them. My ID doc told me to wait 6-12 months if possible before taking an antibiotic, but if you have to take them, you really have no choice. I did everything I could to stay away from them during my UTIs...drinking vinegar water, drinking lots of water, cranberry pills, special probiotics for the urinary tract, and D-Mannose. Unfortunately, these didn't help, but I didn't start taking them until I actually had the UTI. I think they're most helpful as a preventive. I took Amoxicillin in Feb of last year for strep throat. Again, no choice in the matter. Fortunately, I had no recurrence, and I'm now well over 3 years from C-Diff. I'm one of the lucky ones! Some folks here have had a recurrence after abx, and some haven't.
What I did is:
I've continued taking probiotics ever since C-Diff. I take Multi-Flora Source 2xdaily and Florastor 1-2xdaily. During the time I took abx, I tripled both of those, spacing the Multi-Flora Source every four hours from the antibiotic. I would even set my alarm during the night to take them, but I don't know if that was helpful or even necessary. Luckily, neither of these cause uncomfortable digestive issues, nor did they when tripling them. During my antibiotics, I was taking 6 Florastor w/in a 24 hour period, and that's a lot and some can't tolerate it. Again, I'm lucky, and I had IBS before C-Diff, which I no longer have. It took me a year to recover from C-Diff, by the way, so I wasn't one of those people that took vanco and was fine once I finished. Even if I'd never had C-Diff, I'd take the probiotics during antibiotics. My 5 year old niece's pediatrician has been advising her mother to give her children's Florastor since she was very young each time she had to take antibiotics. I've also found that the probiotics help tremendously with nausea and D I used to get while taking abx prior to C-Diff. That's just me. I don't know about other folks, but I KNOW they've helped me tremendously.
Just on a side note: there were many times I thought I had a UTI during and after C-Diff, when I did not. Cultures came back negative. My doctor explained that when you have an irritable bowel, you can also get what's called "irritable bladder", which can feel just like a UTI -thus the importance of the culture.
Have you asked your doc about taking Flagyl while you're on the antibiotic to try to prevent C-Diff? My mom (who's had C-Diff) has chronic UTIs and takes Flagyl each time she's on them. Twice she has relapsed or had recurrences when she didn't take the flagyl, and once when she just took a strong laxative and not on abx. This was years ago. As for me, I can't take flagyl and didn't want to take vanco while on the abx, so I went the probiotic route, though I really can't explain why I haven't had recurrences. All I know is that I'll continue this for the rest of my life, and keep my fingers crossed.
I'm wishing you the very best! Please let us know how things go.
